70% of South Africans Die Without a Will
Without a will, the Intestate Succession Act decides everything. Here is what that means for your family:
Your partner may inherit nothing
Not married? Your partner has zero legal claim to your estate — even after 20 years together. The law gives everything to your parents or siblings instead.
18+ months of frozen assets
Your family cannot access your bank accounts, sell your car, or pay the bond. Everything is frozen while the Master's Office works through the backlog.
R120,000+ lost to legal fees
When family members dispute the estate — and they often do — attorneys take 30%+ of everything. That is R300,000 gone on a R1M estate because you did not spend 10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about creating your will
Is this really 100% free?
Yes, absolutely! There are no hidden fees, no credit card required, and no trial periods. We believe every South African should have access to a legal will, regardless of their financial situation. You can create, download, and print your will for R0.
Is it legally valid in South Africa?
Yes! Our wills are designed to comply with the Wills Act 7 of 1953. As long as you follow the signing requirements (you sign + 2 witnesses sign, all in each other's presence), your will is legally valid. However, we are a document generation tool, not a law firm, so we recommend consulting an attorney for complex estates (over R3.5M) or complicated family situations.
What about witnesses? Who can witness my will?
Critical: Witnesses CANNOT be beneficiaries! If a beneficiary witnesses your will, they forfeit their inheritance. Your witnesses must be:
- At least 14 years old
- Mentally competent
- NOT beneficiaries in your will
- Both present together when you sign (same room, same time)
Good options: friends, colleagues, neighbors, or anyone you trust who is NOT receiving anything in your will.
Can I update my will later?
Yes! Life changes, and your will should too. You can return to urWill anytime to create an updated will. Just make sure to destroy all old copies when you create a new one, and sign the new version with 2 witnesses. Your most recent validly signed will is the one that counts.
Do I need a lawyer?
For most South Africans, no! If your situation is straightforward (you want to leave everything to your spouse/children, your estate is under R3.5M, and you don't have complex business interests), our tool is perfect for you. We've built this to be legally compliant with the Wills Act 7 of 1953.
Where should I store my will?
Keep the original in a safe place where your executor can find it (fireproof safe, safety deposit box, or with your attorney). Give copies to your executor and a trusted family member. DO NOT keep it in a sealed safe that no one can open - your executor needs to access it quickly when the time comes.
What is the blockchain certificate?
We create a cryptographic "fingerprint" (SHA-256 hash) of your will and store it on our PostgreSQL blockchain ledger. This provides tamper-proof evidence that your will existed at a specific time. The hash cannot be reverse-engineered to reveal your will's contents - it's just proof of existence. 100% open-source and auditable.
What happens to my data? Is it private?
Your privacy is critical. By default, your will data is stored ONLY in your browser's localStorage (on YOUR device), not on our servers. We comply with South Africa's POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act). We NEVER sell your data to third parties. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
How long does it take to create a will?
Most people complete their will in 10-15 minutes. You can save your draft and come back later if you need more time. The process is simple: enter your information, list your beneficiaries, describe your assets, choose an executor, and generate the PDF. Then print, sign with 2 witnesses, and you're protected!
